Sony DLC-HD10H, DLC-HD20H HDMI Cables

Sony is to introduce a new type of HDMI cable, Sony DLC-HD10H and DLC-HD20H.

As LCD TVs become ever thinner – especially with the approach of OLCD TV – and the increasing popularity of wall-mounted LCD TVs, installation using existing HDMI cables is becoming more of an issue.

A standard cable plugged into a horizontal HDMI socket typically requires up to 7cm clearance, especially if a ferrite noise suppressor is fitted. This can make streamlined wall mounting difficult to achieve.

The new Sony DLC-HD10H and DLC-HD20H HDMI cables are designed to combat this issue. Its HDMI connectors rotate through 180 degrees, so you can create right angle connections, and each cable requires just 29mm clearance.

Sony DLC-HD10H and DLC-HD20H HDMI Cable Features

  • Sony DLC-HD10H – 1 metre cable
  • Sony DLC-HD10H – 2 metre cable
  • HDMI™ version 1.3a Category 2 rated for an all-digital, uncompressed A/V signal supporting 1080p or higher
  • Support for up to 10.2Gbps signal bandwidth, 240Hz refresh rate and 48-bit Deep Colour
  • 24 carat gold plated connectors for optimal conductivity and long life
  • High quality OFC, Oxygen-Free Copper, core wire for excellent signal transmission quality
  • Triple shielding for a high level of protection from electro-magnetic interference
  • Sony Playstation 3 and Blu-ray Certified, compatible with BRAVIA Theatre Sync and X.V. Colour

Viliv S5 Premium UMPC

Viliv S5 Review

Up to 2007 and perhaps into 2008, single purpose gadgets ruled. Everyone, it seemed, had MP3 Players and Digital Cameras. But as we settle ourselves into 2009, the idea of having a device that has just one purpose, seems quite hard to comprehend. Practically any phone incorporates a camera and mp3 player, and most smartphones also include email and a satnav.

The good news is that we are getting more for our money as manufacturers cram more and more into these multi-purpose gadgets. Enter the Viliv S5 Premium.

The Viliv S5 is an UMPC, Ultra Purpose Personal Computer, a PMP and a Satnav. Is it any good, well the Koreans thought so as it sold out there within 15 mins when launched earlier this month.

The Viliv S5 is primarily a PC, and by way of proving the point, it uses the same Intel Atom 1.33GHz processor that drives the new Sony Vaio P-Series. It runs Windows XP and has G grade WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

When we tested the Viliv S5 we were impressed with the brightness and quality of the screen, even outdoors. Screen size is good too at 4.8 inches. There is an on-screen QWERTY keyboard which is activated by the click of a button.

The S5 has enough storage space for the equivalent of 60 full-length feature films, that’s 60Gb HDD. From a music point of view, the S5 can store around 8,000 MP3 files, but the S5 is so much more than a MP3 Player.

If you’re expecting us to say that the Viliv S5 features A-GPS, you’d be wrong. Yes it does have Satnav functionality but the S5 features the impressive SiRFstar III chip instead, which is the same chip that TomTom, Garmin, et al use in their top-of-the-range GPS devices.

Size wise, the S5 has similiar dimensions to a Sony PSP and weighs in at just 385g. It has more storage than an Apple iTouch and a Satnav that will blow any Smartphone equivalent out of the water. Multi-purpose devices are the future, and the Viliv S5 is a good option if you are looking to join the revolution.

OLED Explained

The short answer is Organic Light Emitting DiodeOLED, and Organic Liquid Crystal DiodeOLCD.

An OLED, LEP – light emitting polymer, or OEL – organic electro luminescence, is any light emitting diode, as in LED display.

These LED devices are composed of a layer of organic compounds such as polymer substances that allow deposits of suitable organic compounds. Layers are built in rows and columns on a flat device, such as a TV or Computer screen, which result in a combined matrix of pixels that emit coloured light.

OLED devices emit less light per area than non-organic based devices which tend to be used as light sources. OLED devices are typically tv screens, computer screens, mobile phones and PDAs.

The most important benefit of an OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays, LCD, is that an OLED display doesn’t require a backlight. This in turn results in lower power consumption and are therefore more eco friendly.

OLCD TV and OLED TV

So what does all that science mean? What it all means is that screens, monitors and displays will be thinner, much thinner.

Typical TV displays could be less than 5mm thick, in fact, Sony have just announced a new OLED TV, the Sony XEL1BU OLED TV, which is just 3mm thick, or should that be thin.

We will shortly be publishing a full review on OLCD TV and OLED TV development.

OLCD TV and OLED TV Features

  • Better contrast, sharper images and more vibrant colours
  • Small size and lightweight
  • Fast response time, measured in microseconds rather than milliseconds
  • Lower power consumption than equivalent LCD
  • Eco friendly
  • High contrast ratios, greater than 1000:1
  • Wide viewing angle: 170°
  • Broad operating temperature range: -40° C to +70° C

GN Jabra BIZ 2400 Headset

Jabra BIZ 2400 Headset Review

GN have announced on their US website that they are to launch a new corded headset, the Jabra BIZ 2400.

When I say, a new headset, I actually mean 19 as there will be various boom options and then all will be available in both mono and duo forms. The models are:

  • Jabra BIZ 2400 Standard Headset
  • Jabra BIZ 2400 IP Headset
  • Jabra BIZ 2400 USB Headset

The BIZ™ part is a trademark so I just need to recognise that before we continue.

The Jabra BIZ 2400 headsets are targetted at serious office users or call centre operators, whether used as a corded headset, IP or with a USB connection. These users are generally all-day wearers and need the high level of quality and durability that the Jabra headsets offer. They are also for users who simply want a high degree of audio quality.
