BlackBerry App World crosses the 10,000 app mark

September 9, 2010 by Sid

It's been over a year since it hit 2,000 apps, but it looks like BlackBerry App World has finally hit its biggest milestone yet -- RIM has announced via Twitter that it's now "10,000 apps strong and growing." For those keeping track, that still leaves it well behind Apple's App Store and the Android Market, which by some estimates boast roughly 250,000 and 70,000 to 100,000 apps, respectively, and each of which also took less time to hit the 10,000 app mark. Even still, the fact that a smartphone platform "only" has 10,000 apps speaks quite a bit to how far we've come in just a few short years.

Gamers get neat with Level Up gaming towers

Level Up's new range of gaming towers will cater for the entire gamut of consoles - we're talking about the PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Rock Band family as well. They're not only nice to look at, but are functional to boot without breaking the bank - after all, with a $69.99 price point, it won't burn a huge hole in your pocket. Tame the Game - that's the mantra which Level Up adheres to to help you remain neat, holding all the relevant consoles, accessories and controllers in place without looking as though a tornado has hit your living room. After all, gamers might be misconstrued as sloppy by some quarters, so why not be tidy with what Level Up has to offer and dispel that myth once and for all?

QUO Computer's latest maxQ2 (square) custom computer takes no prisoners

QUO Computer has just announced its latest maxQ2 (squared) custom computer which was specially developed by Apple enthusiasts who are extremely well versed with Mac OS X. It is interesting to note that QUO Computer's maxQ2 (squared) can run not only on Mac OS X, but Linux and Windows 7 natively as well. Powered by Intel’s Core i7 processor, it carries enough processing muscle to handle just about anything you throw at it - assuming you are not working on the latest 3D computer generated animation movie for the masses. Other hardware specifications include 12GB RAM, a 240GB SSD (!), a 1TB hard drive and an NVIDIA 285 GTX. Such specifications deserve a liquid cooling solution, and that's what the maxQ2 (squared) comes with. It will retail for $3,765 upwards when September 15 rolls around. We're stoked to see what kind of framerates one can achieve with such hardware. The 240GB SSD will surely make up a huge chunk of the final price tag, but we can forsee the drool that is currently dripping from your mouth as you wistfully imagine having this beast in front of you. eLocity A7 pre-orders now ready to be taken

Stream TV Networks' upcoming 7-inch eLocity A7 tablet is now ready to rock and roll, having reached the pre-order stage. It will be powered by Android 2.2 right out of the box, so there is no need to worry about waiting for a firmware update anytime soon, and with the 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra T-20 processor running proceedings from within, you can be sure that processing muscle is the least of your worries. Other hardware specifications include 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal memory (good thing that can be augmented using a microSDHC memory card), a built-in USB 2.0 port, an HDMI output, a 1.3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. At least it is easier to make decisions for folks who can't make up their minds since there is only one model to choose from at the omment. You can place a pre-order over Amazon for the eLocity A7 for $370, and we await with bated breath for a release date. Seems that we were wrong about the August 24th pre-order date.

Buckeye Bullet electric car takes world land speed record for its vehicle class

Ohio State University's "Buckeye Bullet" is one lean, mean electric vehicle. After all, the electric steed has recently (as of last month) beat the world land speed record for an electric car. Just how fast did this vehicle go? Well, it managed to hit a peak speed of 320 miles per hour, now how about that? Even a Ferrari or souped up Lamborghini won't hit such insane levels. Check out a video of CNN's Buckeye Bullet coverage in the extended post.

Adobe issues warning of Reader and Acrobat bug

Adobe has fired a warning to users of its hugely popular Reader and Acrobat PDF viewing and creation software, touting that some malicious code out there has started to exploit an unpatched bug in both software after learning of the attacks yesterday. Here's what Adobe has to say about the situation.

"A critical vulnerability exists in Adobe Reader 9.3.4 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Acrobat 9.3.4 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh. Adobe is in the process of evaluating the schedule for an update to resolve this vulnerability."

Said vulnerability could very well crash and potentially enable an attacker to take control of the affected system. Hopefully all will be fixed in due time, but you can do your part by being alert when it comes to suspicious stuff whenever dealing with files and websites.

6G iPod nano could support video playback

6G iPod nano could support video playback

The sixth generation of Apple's iPod nano might not support video playback right out of the box, but it does make the provision for photo slideshows. In the internal settings property list, things get a whole lot more interesting as it does drop a hint or two that additional video support may see the light of day sometime down the road. After all, there were options for captions and alternative audio which does drop the ball for possible upcoming movie and TV support. We look forward to see whether a future firmware update (if any) of the iOS-like operating system will unlock the doors to video playback capability on this little iPod that could. Something tells us that a third party accessory which looks like a watch strap where you slide the 6G iPod nano over could end up being an extremely popular sell...

Dell lays down the law: no more Windows XP shipments after October 22nd

Microsoft already informed its most moneyed partners that no more systems could leave their labs after October 22nd with Windows XP, but given that the proverbial boy has cried wolf before, we were inclined to think that we'd eventually face yet another push back. We guess there's still a few ticks of the clock left between now and that fateful day, but there seems to be little hope for XP to live on in any significant form beyond the aforesaid date. Dell has just published a report noting that they will stop offering XP on new machines later this month in preparation for October's cutoff, though they're quick to point out that Microsoft will continue Windows XP driver support until December 2012. For the average consumer, that means you've got just over a month to get whatever XP-equipped systems you want from Dell; for select "qualified customers," they will still be able to snag XP machines post-October 22nd through the company's Custom Factory Integration service. Hit the source link for all the details, and feel free to pour one out for a waning OS. We can shed a few more tears next month.
