Getting your PS3 primed for some imminent 3D Blu-ray action? Well, you’re going to have to wait, as Sony’s pushed back the planned September release of the much-vaunted home entertainment update.
The new firmware which packs 3D Blu-ray support for Sony’s home hub has now been delayed until October. Worryingly though, the Big S hasn’t handed over a specific date, which could mean an even longer wait for the console to play nice with your new 3D telly.
Of course, 3D Blu-rays aren’t widely available yet, although that’s set to change when Avatar lands later this year. And with 3D gaming on the agenda for the PS3, this is an upgrade all PS3 owners will be gagging for.

Sony has just informed Euroland that its
Qriocity on-demand ecosystem will be showing up in the continent's wealthier regions this fall. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK will get a chance to savor the Video On Demand option, which will form the vanguard of a wideranging content streaming service, available on Sony networked devices -- yes, that includes the do-it-all PlayStation 3. The heavyweight movie studios behind the venture include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount and, of course, Sony's moviemaking arm. But you already knew that, given that the whole enchilada's been available to American gringos since April. All Qriocity participants will get to use a new
Music Unlimited service, which is launching by the end of the year with as yet undetermined pricing. Plans are also afoot to offer Qriocity on third party devices, but until then you'll wanna make sure to have one of them newfangled web-connected Bravia TVs or any of the litany of Blu-ray players and home theater setups Sony is busy promoting
right this minute.

Poor, poor Sony. First
PSJailbreak splayed wide the PS3's security model, now PSGroove has arrived calling itself the "open source PSjailbreak." The code must first be downloaded and installed onto a $30ish AT90USBkey or a $25ish Teensy++ USB development board. After that, homebrew enthusiasts can then execute unsigned third-party apps and games on their PS3. At the moment, the ability to boot ISO files (read: pirated or "backup" games) is temporarily disabled. But we're sure that some of the internet's more nefarious types will find their way around that. Cat, welcome to the world outside of the bag.

Perhaps you've heard that Apple's
investing in digital video distribution at the moment? Perhaps you've read that Amazon's working on a
subscription video network, too? Sony makes number three, as the
Financial Times is reporting the electronics giant is looking to launch a multimedia platform of its own. Starting with the PlayStation 3 and PSP, and then later extending to internet-connected Sony TVs, Blu-ray players, Vaio computers and phones, the service will reportedly offer both music and video sometime next year in what's no doubt an attempt to work out deep-seated guilt at
the death of Connect. You won't have to wait nearly that long, however, to find out what's what -- the publication says Sir Stringer intends to preempt
Apple's six-string reveal by announcing the PlayStation Network-based service from IFA 2010 in Germany. Call us crazy, but this sounds like a perfect fit for the Sony's out-of-the-blue
$130 Netbox.

As tempting as it might be to
jailbreak your PS3, you really probably definitely shouldn't. Because when you do, Sony can detect the software ID the jailbreak program uses, and ban your PS3 remotely. According to a

From a supply chain management standpoint, this all makes sense -- why have four separate PS3 SKUs with various HDD sizes when just a pair will do? After announcing last week that a
160GB and 320GB PS3 Slim would be making landfall in the US and Europe, it seems as if
Sony has decided to phase out the existing 120GB and 250GB flavors. There's no definitive word on when production on those will stop (we're surmising that the stop order has already been placed), but it looks as if some retailers are already starting up fire sales on the now-old models. For those curious, that's a Fry's installation pictured above, which is selling their leftover 250GB units for just $299, or the same price as the incoming 160GB unit. Decisions, decisions...

Shock of all horrors,
Gran Turismo 5 actually, finally has a launch date: November 3 (for Japan, anyhow). Of course, being more concerned with hardware as we are, our excitement is focused on the rich blue hue that will adorn PS3 consoles bundled with the grandiosely delayed racing game over in Nippon this fall. The ¥35,980 ($421) Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack will be composed of a Limited Edition copy of the game plus a
repainted skinny PlayStation 3 with a 160GB hard drive. Time to give your old importer buddy a call, eh?

Ha! Hahahaha. Sorry, please excuse my laughter—I just find it hilarious that the advertising agency employed by Microsoft thought they could get away with showing PS3
Final Fantasy XIII scenes. "Wot, it's the same game, innit?"
