A Flymo shredder is a brilliant gadget for a gardener who’s already got a lawnmower, and various hedge cutting power tools. It’s an invaluable tool both in Spring and Autumn and can turn piles of cut branches and twigs into finely shredded material which can then be put directly on to the compost pile where it will quickly break down.

For gardeners with lots of perennial plants and hedges it’s a tool that can save you trips to the tip to dispose of excess amounts of garden waste. The volume of materials is much reduced once it’s been shredded and it can be used directly as a mulch in some areas of your garden. The flymo shredder is a stylish gadget too with an attractive looking collection box and sturdy structure.

Although this electric shredder has a powerful 2500W motor it will operate quietly and has auto feed using a notching action mechanism. The feed in can take up to 40mm diameter items which makes it more useful as it takes larger items. The collection box is 62l volume too meaning you have to empty it less. It has a cutting speed is 40 rpm.

It’s also easy to store as it all folds down into the collection box.

Also available is an impact shredder. This doesn’t have the stylish appeal of the flymo, but has a similar power motor and can also take 40mm prunings to shred. If you’re on a budget this could be a good alternative.

Shredding takes bulky plant material and reduces it massively. This means you can either compost it more quickly, or it bags up easier for either taking to the tip or putting in your plant recycling bins.

Mulch made by shredding plants and twigs can be used directly on the garden under established trees and hedges.
