Garmin have today announced the Garmin Nüvi 1490T in conjunction with The Gadget Show in Birmingham, UK, on April 17-19 2009.

The Nüvi 1490T is a top-of-the-range GPS SatNav for cars and lorries with a large, 5-inch touchscreen and a slimmer body style that is 25-percent slimmer than most nüvi models.

“The nüvi 1490T is designed to give drivers a big picture of the route ahead, while offering every-day conveniences customers want and need to take the worry out of traveling,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “With its enhanced pedestrian navigation capabilities and ultra-thin design, it’s also a perfect companion for travelers in unfamiliar territory who want to explore the city on foot or with public transportation.”

Garmin Nüvi 1490T Review

I don’t know about you but I’ve never liked those small screens on the current batch of SatNav devices, so I was particularly pleased to learn of Garmin’s plans to launch a 5-inch touch-screen GPS device. By the way, I’m off to the press day at The Gadget Show Live tomorrow so I’m hoping to get a first glance of the Nüvi 1490T at the Garmin stand so will write an update in a day or two.

I’m not going to go on about what a Garmin device will do because I’m sure you already know. What I will do however is set-out what the Nüvi 1490T will deliver .. well, that’ll be the 5-inch touch-screen then.

Ok, so there is a bit more to say. For example, the nüvi 1490T will save 10 routes, making multiple routes possible because the nüvi will calculate the most efficient route between multiple stops. This includes cross-continent automatic time zone updates.

A feature of the nüvi 1490T, but not on every SatNav, the device alerts drivers to traffic accidents, road closures and construction. An integrated traffic receiver comes standard with the nüvi 1490T and gives free, lifetime traffic alerts without a subscription fee. The free lifetime traffic alerts are from NAVTEQ Traffic and are available in select coverage areas. Lifetime traffic alerts extend for the useful life of the nüvi unit or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier.

To help drivers with their eco-guilt, Garmin have built into the nüvi 1490T as standard, an ecoRoute™ function that suggests fuel-efficient navigation. This allows drivers to select faster time, shorter distance, and now less fuel as options.

The Garmin Nüvi 1490T comes with Bluetooth Wireless Technology that makes it possible to receive and place phone calls directly from the nüvi. The nüvi supports over 200 Bluetooth enabled phones.

The ultra-thin nüvi 1490T also offers enhanced pedestrian navigation capability with optional CityXplorer™ maps. Available for select tourist destinations in both North America and Europe, CityXplorer maps can easily be downloaded directly to the nüvi. With CityXplorer, users will make the most of their journey by planning and using routes that include public transit options such as bus and metro rail stations. Content from CityXplorer varies in cost from $9.99 – $14.99, depending on the city. A list of cities offered in North America and Europe will be available on the Garmin website

Garmin 1490T. Bought from Satnaveasy. Great service. Pity it was let down by bad software. Had it 2 days first day kept turning itself off 3 times on one trip had to re-enter post code. 2nd day screen kept freezing. Contacted Satnaveasy was informed of a software problem. Contacted Garmin told the same but this time I was told to hold there would be a patch, when asked how long, they could not tell me. Why sell these if there is a problem. Surely they should be withdrawn until retested. Sent back to Satnaveasy with a full refund at least one company can get its act together.

The resolution is the same as the 4.3 wide-screens units but the extra space is well worth it and noticeable! It also makes it easy to hit the right button on the touch screen.
