Rumours are circulating that Sony may be about to launch a new slim version of their popular PS3 console. This isn’t, however, the eagerly awaited PS4 console.

So what are we to make of this news. If true, then it is likely that the new Playstation 4 will not be launched until 2012 or even 2013.

There is of course some credibility in the story as Sony do have a track record of going slim and lite. In fact, looking back, they have done it with all their consoles including the PSOne, PS2 and most recently the PSP Slim.

As far as possible features and specifications are concerned, clearly it’s hard to be precise. However, in order for the PS3 Slim to migrate from the bedroom to the lounge and thus be used as the main Blu Ray Player, the design must improve. A new slim Playstation 3 would of course help this enormously.

The current PS3 started life with 40GB, then 60GB and now 80GB. Rumours of a 160GB Playstation have been around for quite a while so perhaps the PS3 Slim is the console that will deliver this 160GB. What is likely is that there will be at least 80GB stuff in there somewhere, and perhaps more.

When we asked Sony for a comment, they gave their usual ‘we don’t comment on rumours’. What is interesting about these rumours is that on the very same day Sony denied that they were planning a new version of the PS3, images were circulated on the Internet of what were claimed to be the new PS3 Slim. The images are not very clear and we have not published them here as we are unable to verify them. However, our friends over at 1UP have published them so it’s worth a quick look if you are interested.

The census of opinion is that the PS3 Slim is highly probable but these images are likely to be false.
